AnnotationNation states and individual citizens have come to recognise that their future income prospects are bound up with the performance of global financial markets. This paper examines European pension income security, employer-sponsored supplementary pensions, risk and return in global stock markets, and regulation of pension security. The paper is an abridged version of a chapter in "Pension security in the 21st century" edited by the author and Neil Whiteside (OUP, 2003), which has also appeared as a working paper of the Oxford Institute of Ageing (WP702).
