Annotation | The National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) emphasises the role of medicines in promoting good health. It states that older people should "gain maximum benefit from their medication" and "not suffer unnecessarily from illness caused by excessive, inappropriate, or inadequate consumption of medicine". In this article, the authors review the common reasons for drug-related diseases in the older population. They describe different types of inappropriate prescribing and some specific tools which have been used to assess prescribing practice. They also comment on some new and innovative practical approaches to monitoring prescriptions in hospitals and community settings, including the role of information technology. (RH). |
