AnnotationBetween February and November 2001, the Social Services Inspectorate (SSI) inspected services for people with learning disabilities in nine councils in England: Bath and North East Somerset, Cumbria, Devon, Kingston-upon-Hull, Leicestershire, Sandwell, Surrey, Sutton, and Tower Hamlets. This report presents the inspection's main findings with examples of good practice on themes including: choice of services; supporting carers; good health; housing and fulfilling lives; quality services; and partnership working. A chapter on improving services provides a checklist for councillors, managers and practitioners that follow the objectives of the White paper, "Valuing people: a new strategy for learning disability for the 21st century" (Cm 5086).
