AnnotationThis was a pilot study that surveyed a mixed group of 25 staff caring for people with dementia, and examined the controversial subject of staff lying to residents. An 8-item questionnaire was used to determine the occurrence, the function, and the problems associated with lying. The work was undertaken to investigate further the authors' clinical impressions that lying was a commonly used strategy in the dementia field, which indeed it was. This paper aims to focus people's attention on the issue. It was a poster presentation at the conference, "Dementia: mind, meaning and the person", held at the Newcastle Centre for Life in 2002.
