AnnotationMany front-line caregivers in residential and nursing home care are in the main unqualified or poorly qualified; rather, they have a wealth of experience gained in previous roles such as parents and informal carers. This study aimed to find out whether a brief work-based training programme would allow non-specialist care and nursing staff to use the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS 15 or GDS 30) to screen residents in their care. One residential home (owned by a care trust) and one privately owned nursing home were recruited for the project. The study reports on the screening results, the experience of the staff involved, the qualitative nature (including as it did some patients' stories), and the study's limitations. (RH).
