Annotation | The development of the Carers of Older People in Europe (COPE) Index (which assesses carers' perceptions of their role) is described, along with the psychometric evaluation of its factor structure, internal consistency, reliability, and criterion validity. 577 informal carers took part in the study: 106 from the UK, 126 from Sweden, 98 from Greece, 88 from Italy, and 159 from two cities in Poland. Carers completed a 17-item version of the COPE Index, a questionnaire on demographic and caregiving circumstances, along with three instruments to validate the Index. Two components, negative impact and positive value, emerged consistently across countries, and were internally consistent and significantly associated with the criterion validity measures. A third component, quality of support, was less consistent. While further testing is required, the COPE Index has current utility in increasing understanding of the role perceptions of carers of older people. (RH). |
