Annotation | Much of the recent debate on pensions has focused on private provision: the collapse of final salary schemes, mis-selling, and falls in the value of the stock market. Yet the most important elements for providing financial security in retirement are the basic and second state pensions. This report summarises the main points raised by speakers from a wide range of backgrounds at this National Pensioners Convention (NPC) conference. The conference was divided into four sessions: an introduction to the current pensions debate; an analysis of the role that the state could play in providing for the retirement of both today's and tomorrow's pensioners; a discussion on how an improved state provision could be afforded; and a discussion panel involving representatives from each of the three main political parties, the TUC and the NPC.
