Annotation | A case study on implementing the second-generation social health maintenance organization (HMO) demonstration programme in Las Vegas within the Health Plan of Nevada indicates the difficulty of integrating medical and social care. Despite great efforts, it took several years before key benefits could be developed adequately and linkages created, as demonstrated by the rate of development of different parts of the service.
