AnnotationMost older people who are discharged from National Health Service (NHS) acute hospitals are dealt with promptly. However, the Department of Health (DH) estimates that some 4,100 or 8.9% of older patients are declared fit to leave hospital on any given day, but are unable to be discharged. This report takes three perspectives on the problem of delayed discharge: whether NHS hospitals are handling the discharge of older patients efficiently; whether the NHS and others are working well together; and what is being done to develop appropriate capacity in health and social care. Appendices include information on: rates and causes of delayed discharge as at 30 September 2002; action in response to recommendations of the Committee of Public Accounts report, "Inpatient admissions, bed management and patient discharge" (HC 135, session 2000/01); and key points from the Health Committee report, "Delayed discharges" (HC 617 session 2001/02) and the Audit Commission report, "Integrated services for older people" (2002).
