Annotation | Having clear goals for retirement is a critical determinant of life satisfaction and adjustment during the post-employment transition period. This study explores the goals for retirement of 55 North Central Oklahoma working adults aged 20 to 67, and determines whether there are age and gender differences in these goals. Retirement goals listed by the respondents were classified into a taxonomy of retirement goals adapted from the 1997 work of LaPierre, Bastin and Bouffard (in vol 45 of this journal, pp 287-303). Both age and gender differences were identified in the concreteness of individuals' goals. Additionally, the number of retirement goals individuals hold decreased across the life span. Results also revealed patterns of age and gender differences across various coding categories in the goal taxonomy. Findings are discussed in terms of the applied benefits of understanding American workers' retirement goals. (RH). |
