AnnotationLeisure activities are widely used in research to predict important outcomes, but the existing studies use different classification schemes and apparently rely on the researcher's intuition to classify activities. John Holland's system (1996) classifies personality and vocational activities into six types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. The authors use Holland's REASIC personality system to empirically classify the activities of a sample of 340 people aged 50 to 96 (mean age 67). Nine activity scales were identified: household interests, manual activities, traditional games, artistic interests, sporting interests, historical interests, personal development, science, and social outings. The correlation of these activity scales with the Holland system showed that they could be reliably classified; further, multidimensional scaling suggested that the pattern of relationship could be interpreted in terms of the RIASEC hexagon. The overall findings suggest that RIASEC may offer a useful way of classifying many activities. (RH).
