AnnotationAlthough pensioners' incomes have risen since 1997, so too has the gap between the richest and the poorest. The research for this report could not identify any signs that future pensioners will be any better off than today's. It also notes some inherent limitations in the data available for analysis of UK pensions policy. The report presents bar and pie charts based on official statistics to illustrate the situation for current pensioners' incomes and pension prospects for future pensioners. It reviews the problems in the current pension system that lead to the risk that tomorrow's pensioners will be worse off than today's. The following points emerge: problems of lower pension income will only become apparent in the long term; the long-term problems are due to unclear responsibilities now; and the future cost to the state of current pension policy is not clear. To avoid these risks, reform of state pensions policy should be debated now. (RH).
