AnnotationSome 18% of Northern Italy's population is aged 65+, but despite this, geriatric psychiatry is still poorly developed in Italy. In a cross-sectional study carried out in three nursing homes (522 beds, 270 caregivers) and 9 geriatric sections of general hospitals (371 beds, 280 caregivers), staff caregivers were asked a 4-part questionnaire comprising socio-demographic data, the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), the Maslach Burnout Inventory (BMI), and the Stressful Events Questionnaire (SEQ); response rate was 66% (172 from nursing homes, 183 from hospitals). Results appear to show that levels of stress and burnout in staff caregivers are moderate in acute geriatric wards, but significantly higher than in nursing homes. This suggests that increasing the rate of trained staff and improving staff support - for instance implementation of Consultation-Liaison (C-L) Psychiatry and/or continuing education programmes - could be needed mostly in acute geriatric wards.
