AnnotationDuring the period 1980 to 2000, the research literature on ethics and dementia has been dominated by surveys and studies soliciting views on predefined issues, with few in-depth qualitative studies. The period has also seen the emergence of new areas of ethical interest, and some areas move from the periphery to the centre of discussion. Four main subject areas appear consistently and frequently in the literature: professional care, end-of-life issues, decision-making, and treatment. The authors examine the strength of relationship between 19 categories, which they map using the "night sky" as a metaphor to show "constellations" of issues and changes over time. They find that the literature has increasingly discussed areas as discrete topics, rather than the relationships between areas of ethical interest. They discuss the limitations of their study, and note some omissions in the literature. (RH).
