AnnotationIn one the first studies showing a significant effect of a psycho-educative support group programme on the caregivers of participants with dementia, 158 participants were recruited through Alzheimer's societies and home care organisations in Quebec province, Canada, and randomised to a study group or control group. Those in the study group had fifteen 2-hour weekly sessions focusing on stress, appraisal and coping. Those in the control group were referred to traditional support groups. Study participants presented a 14% decrease in their reactions to behavioural problems of care receivers, as opposed to a 5% decrease in the control group. The frequency of behavioural problems also decreased. (RH).
