AnnotationThe retirement experiences of professional and non-professional women are compared, based on an analysis of 48 interviews with American women aged 63 to 83. Participants provided personal and occupational histories, and described their retirement decisions, transitions and lives in retirement. The women's retirement experiences differed in five areas: attachment to work; professional identity; social contacts; family roles and obligations; and community involvement. Findings indicate that investment in the work role does affect women's transition to retirement as well as how they structure their time in retirement. (KJ/RH).
