Annotation | Throughout the United States, departments of corrections are experiencing increases in their prison populations. More specifically, the number of ageing prisoners is increasing and will continue to grow as younger prisoners, who have long sentences with no possibility of parole, age in prison. Long-term care will also be an issue confronting prisons with ageing inmate populations. Yet little is known about the nature or extent of the need. This paper focuses on the increased need for long-term care for older prisoners. It identifies key questions related to furnishing such care, and makes recommendations to help develop strategies.
