AnnotationThe Centre for Research in Social Policy (CRSP) was commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to carry out research to review evidence about self-employment as a (sustained) route off benefit. The overall aim was to inform the development of policies to help people to move into self-employment, and to progress within the labour market. This summary outlines the main report's two main sections. The first presents findings of a literature review and a number of qualitative interviews. It outlines the individual characteristics of those entering self-employment from unemployment and the nature of that self-employment. The second section provides a detailed analysis of participants who have taken the self-employment route, for example through the New Deal 50 Plus programme. Further analysis is also presented of claimants who have moved from benefits into self-employment based on British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) data. (RH).
