Annotation | Many older people consider that the rapidly changing and complex world of finance leaves them marginalised, and can engender a sense of powerlessness. This report follows on from a NIACE briefing paper for the DfES, "Financial literacy and older people". It sets the context in relation to financial exclusion, and the need for better financial knowledge, understanding and skills, especially for older people. Their lower participation in learning is identified as a problem that needs to be tackled. The report looks at the relationships between those who provide financial services, and the role adult education has in improving "financial literacy". NIACE project and development work with partner agencies on curriculum materials is described. Examples of existing programmes and suggestions on ways of extending the curriculum to improve financial knowledge are outlined. The report makes recommendations that are aimed at government, education providers and other agencies. (RH). |
