AnnotationThe focus of this paper is primarily on assessing and determining the need for the Indian Government to initiate and support long-term, policy-oriented research on India's aged and ageing population (age 60+). It examines key aspects of the National Policy for Older Persons (NPOP) announced in January 1999, including programmes for the destitute old. The impact of UN initiatives of the early 1990s on national governments, but focusing on India, are discussed. Some comparisons are made with China's policies on ageing. (RH).
