AnnotationNorms about filial responsibility govern intergenerational relationships in Nepal and throughout Asia more generally. This is demonstrated by the fact that as many as 83% of older Nepalese people continue to live with an adult child. Nonetheless, the sense of obligation to and responsibility for older people may erode with the prolific social and economic transformations that are taking place in Nepal - changes that are in some ways similar to those that have occurred in other Asian countries. In this article, the authors examine the impact these changes have had on children's attitudes toward responsibility for the care of ageing parents. (RH).
