AnnotationCaregiving burden experienced by 404 Korean and 766 Japanese caregivers of impaired older people was examined, guided by Lazarus and Folkman's Transactional Model of Stress and Coping (1984). This study hypothesises that caregiving burden is affected by four factors: stressors, resources, background variables (e.g. family relationship between caregiver and older person), and ethnicity. For the joined Korean and Japanese sample, multiple regression analysis reveals that all variables except frequency of caregiving are statistically significant. In particular, Korean caregivers had more severe caregiving burden than Japanese caregivers when background variables, stressors, and resources were controlled. This difference seems to result from several factors, such as relative underdevelopment of ageing policy in Korea. The study suggests that more attention should be given to long-term care policy in both countries. (RH).
