AnnotationThree broad factors bring Asia to an interesting crossroads with regard to population ageing: the magnitude and speed of demographic trends; the concurrent social and economic changes ongoing throughout much of the region; and the awareness of policy-makers to potential threats to older people's well-being. As a result, policy-makers are interested in fashioning programmes that tackle emerging needs, yet which are not excessively costly or do not undermine traditional social arrangements. This article reviews the key demographic changes, and contrasts them with Europe. It highlights three research perspectives - cohort succession, family accommodations, and older life course transitions - which can provide essential insights for policy and programme development in the areas of health services, social welfare programmes, and retirement provision.
