AnnotationThe sensitivity and specificity of a range of tests for detecting cognitive impairment after stroke was assessed. Stroke patients recruited within 4 seeks of admission to hospitals in Nottingham, Mansfield and Derby were screened for cognitive impairment with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Sheffield Screening Test for Acquired Language Disorders (SST), and Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM); further tests of cognitive function were also carried out. The MMSE was not a useful screen for memory problems or overall cognitive impairment after stroke. The SST was an appropriate screen for language problems. The RCPM was appropriate as a screen for perceptual problems and visual inattention, but not for executive deficits. (RH).
