AnnotationWhether older people recognise their symptoms of dementia and its impact on their self-concept was investigated in a cross-sectional qualitative study. The research paradigm employed the principles of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and grounded theory methodology. The principles of content analysis were also used, to measure the participants' recognition of their symptoms of dementia. Ten participants (five male, five female) were recruited from four mental health services for older adults. The results indicate that participants spontaneously mentioned two or more symptoms of dementia and a further four or more with prompting. Themes and categories were generated from the data, namely the participants' reactions to their symptoms of dementia, their management strategies and self-perceptions. (RH).
