Annotation | Social Europe gets much less publicity in Britain than does economic Europe. The development of the Common Internal Market is well known; and most people are aware of their increased freedom to work in different European countries. However, the social dimension of the European Union (EU) receives much less attention. Sir Tony Atkinson has been Warden of Nuffield College, Oxford since 1994 and a Trustee of the Nuffield Foundation since 1995. In this lecture, he describes recent developments in social Europe, and seeks to clarify the contribution of social science to these developments. (RH). |
