AnnotationThe title, "Working on the fault line", reflects the importance of the debate on the proper relationships between agencies and individual practitioners involved in health and community care. Five detailed research studies are presented on health-related social work and its engagement with hospital, primary and community care. Mark Lymbery and Andy Millward report on a project placing social workers in primary health care settings, and relating to the move from fundholding general practitioners (GPs) to primary care groups (PCGs). Sarah Webb and Enid Levitt explore day-to-day activities of social work practitioners working in both hospital and locality based settings. Jill Manthorpe and Greta Bradley consider hospital social work in the context of care management, and look at examples of work with older people at individual level. Bridget Penhale examines the role of the hospital accident and emergency department (A&E) in screening inpatient admissions, as a referral point to social services staff in the hospital, and in discharge problems. Vanessa Malin adopts a policy study approach to continuing and long-term care; she highlights the continual adjustments to terminology, definition and responsibility. (RH).
