AnnotationMost older people live in general housing. This review argues that lifestyle choices made by people through most of their old age need to be taken into account alongside the more usual concerns for potential increases in frailty and dependence. An introduction provides a brief overview of some of the key issues. Demographic and statistical data are reviewed, also some of the characteristics of the rising older generation that may affect their housing situation and housing choices. The review also focuses on the characteristics of neighbourhoods and communities that will meet older people's needs, aspirations and priorities. The implications of current and future requirements of older people in the design and operation of their homes are discussed. The key issues identified are summarised in a set of recommendations for planners, developers and those interested in the impact of an ageing society on housing provision. This report was originally commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), to inform the planning of a new edge-of-town development in York. (RH).
