AnnotationHow much income do people need to enjoy their retirement? The Family Budget Unit (FBU) attempts to answer this question in research commissioned by Age Concern England (ACE). The 'Modest but Adequate' (MBA) standard of living used in this and previous similar reports by the FBU on pensioner budgets is explained. The report estimates the living costs (including income tax, council tax and VAT) of six typical households aged 65-74 years, living in York, in April 2002. Given that no two households have identical preferences, a distinction is made between budget standard costs and variable costs; the components of each are quantified. Summary budgets are also presented for the six types of household (single woman, single man, or married couple, who are either local authority tenants or owner occupiers). Appendices illustrate the adequacy of food purchases and weekly menus. Although budget standards research has its limitations, the research aims to demonstrate that retirement incomes are seen to be 'fair'. (RH).
