AnnotationIn 2000, the Department of Health (DH) initiated an analytical study of nursing home and residential care supply, and where data was available, of home care. The study was in response to concerns about the decline in numbers of nursing and residential care home places for older people since 1998. The study involved a combination of research commissioned from the Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) at the University of Kent and London School of Economics (LSE). In addition to examining trends in supply and projections of demand, the report analyses local variations in supply and demand of residential care for older people, commissioning arrangements, and issues around closures of care homes.
