Annotation | The topic of old age psychiatry is approached under five main section headings: basic science; clinical practice; psychiatric services; specific disorders; and sexuality, ethics and medico-legal decisions. Developments in the field of molecular biology are covered, as are the improvements in our understanding of the pathogenesis of the dementias, specifically, although not limited to Alzheimer's disease (AD). All of the chapters have been revised and updated, with new chapters on the economics of care, suicide in old age, hallucinations, and functional symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). The intention is to reflect developments in the speciality in the previous five years (1997-2001). (RH). |
