Journal title | Journal of Aging and Health, vol 14, no 4, November 2002 |
Pages | pp 509-526 |
Keywords | Depression ; Morale ; Death ; Cross sectional surveys ; United States of America. |
Annotation | A single survey question about feelings of sadness and depression is predictive of death occurring within 2 years. This finding is based on a national cross-sectional survey of 141,589 enrollees in Medicare aged 65+. Results were consistent across age, gender and presence or absence of known heart disease. Other responses associated with death were older age, male gender, and self-reported cancers, shortness of breath, heart failure, and smoking among other characteristics. Higher education and being married appeared to protect from death. (RH). |
