Annotation | Living arrangements and social contact are important determinants of leisure time physical activity (LTPA). Data for this cross-sectional investigation comes from the Study of Physical Performance and Age-related Changes in Sonomans (SPPARCS), a longitudinal study of more than 2,000 over 55s in Sonoma, California. The odds of different levels of LTPA were assessed by living arrangement and social contacts, after adjusting for measures of health, functioning, physical performance, selected health behaviours and socioeconomic status for men and women separately. Level of LTPA was also measured for married couples only (511 spouse pairs). The relationship between living arrangements, social contacts and LTPA varied by gender and level of LTPA. For married couples, the LTPA of the partner was the most significant predictor of LTPA of the participant, with the exception of those who engaged in less brisk activity. (RH). |
