Annotation | In this paper, counselling refers to a therapeutic approach that places value on the person's subjective experience, and challenges the person to accept responsibility for his or her own life. The author notes that the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) specifically cites counselling as having an important role to play in the treatment of older people with depression, to promote psychological well-being in people with chronic conditions (including dementia), for carers, and as a source of bereavement support. This review points to literature on the counselling process, and on the effectiveness of counselling older people. (RH). |
