AnnotationThe authors have developed the Alcohol-Related Problems Survey (ARPS) as a screening measure to identify older people with these risks. Of 549 current drinkers age 65+ in their sample, 11% were harmful drinkers and 35% were hazardous drinkers. Harmful drinking was more prevalent among men than women, and in those aged under 75 than 75+. Similar proportions of men and women and younger and older age groups were hazardous drinkers. Most harmful drinkers were identified by their use of alcohol with their comorbidity, whereas most hazardous drinkers were identified by their use of alcohol with medications. Test-retest reliability was substantial. The authors urge doctors to screen older people for alcohol-related problems. (RH).
