AnnotationOlder men who live alone are at increased risk for loss of independence. In particular, admission to hospital often marks the transition from independent living to long term institutional care. This study of 54 older men examines the relationship between their admission to rehabilitation and their subsequent ability to return home to live alone. Subject data were collected using several standardised assessments, including the Functional Independence Measure (FIM), the Morris Dementia Rating Scale (MDRS), and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Results showed that physical function improved significantly for the total sample between admission and discharge, and was significantly higher for the group of men who returned home alone (in contrast to the non-live-alone group). The men who returned home to live alone also reported significantly greater independence than their non-live-alone counterparts in a variety of activity of daily living (ADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL) skills. It is also noteworthy that the group of men who did not return home to live alone were depressed, as measured by the GDS at discharge and at 3- and 4-month follow-ups. (RH).
