AnnotationClinical notes of all dementia patients admitted to a Hong Kong in-patient psychogeriatric unit in 1999 and 2000 were reviewed, to retrieve information on various subtypes of dementia diagnosed prospectively using NINCDS-ADRDA, NINDS-AIREN and DSM-IV by qualified senior psychogeriatricians. Of 112 dementia inpatients, there were only three cases of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), giving a prevalence rate of 2.9% over a 2-year period, which is markedly lower than figures reported in western studies. Ethnically related biological factors may be implicated to explain the preliminary low prevalence rate in a Chinese population. (RH).
