Annotation | The grounded theory method was used to examine how older Hong Kong Chinese experience changes associated with admission to a nursing home, and the processes through which they pass in adjusting to living in a nursing home. Data were collected from 98 interviews with 18 such residents, one week after admission and then monthly until no new information about their adjustment experience could be discovered. Constant comparative analysis identifies four stages of adjustment: orientation, normalising, rationalising, and stabilising. Barriers to adjustment identified are living with rules and regulations, and the communal nature of life; establishing relations with other residents is a particular challenge. (RH). |
