AnnotationNarrative gerontology is an emerging sub-field within the broader study of ageing. A key theme is that ageing is a biographical process, which involves continual "storying" and "restorying" of personal experience. Those providing instruction in narrative gerontology may be confronted with a unique set of challenges as they encourage learners to look through the lens of the life-as-story. The author outlines certain strategies employed to meet such challenges, and reflects on the task of helping learners to apply a narrative perspective to a range of ageing issues. He considers the importance of metaphor, especially the notion of narrative as root metaphor. He explores how and why the concept of story can be taught, the role and implications of constructing life stories, and the consequent benefits to older people and gerontologists. The author concludes that narrative gerontology has much to offer as both an investigative method to create understanding of later life, and as a basis for therapeutic intervention that complements other procedures.
