AnnotationIt is well documented that older people have problems on a variety of Piagetian tasks, including the conservation problem - which relates to the ability to recognise that number, mass or volume does not alter when the physical appearance is altered. However, studies of conservation have often used institutionalised participants and/or have not replicated the original Piagetian study. This study assessed 46 participants aged 60+ from four English cities on the original conservation tasks and, in addition, on fluid intelligence and need for cognition measures. Older participants were significantly worse at conserving, and that volume conservation was the first to decline (thus mirroring the order of acquisition of conservation skills). Stepwise regression analysis found age to be the best predictor of performance. (RH).
