Annotation | This article tests a path model of perceived caregiver burden on a sample of 150 Asian-Indian caregivers in Dallas and Forth Worth, Texas, interviewed by telephone. The model specifies the impact of mental health problems on the caregiver on perceived caregiver burden. A preliminary causal model was used to estimate the effects of the hypothesised determinants on perceived caregiver burden. Results indicate that the combination of having young children in the household, the caregiver's spouse having long working hours, and the behaviour problems of older people affects perceived burden. Screening older people for various chronic diseases is needed. Use of outreach and intervention programmes to locate and assist the caregiver's mental health problems are an important first step in helping caregivers to provide care in a multigenerational household. Guidelines for practitioners are discussed. (RH). |
