AnnotationAlthough it has been argued that caregiver burden and caregiver well-being tap the same underlying construct, recent studies appear to contradict that view using cross-sectional data. The authors examine this issue, by applying multilevel models to repeated measures of up to 6 years in duration of caregiver reports of mental burden and mental well-being. Although they find that changes in burden and well-being have a highly significant, positive relationship, well-being shows a linear decrease over time, independent of changes in caregiver burden. They conclude that mental burden and mental well-being are highly related but are distinct constructs, and that both should be included as outcome measures in caregiver intervention studies. (RH).
