Annotation49 male patients at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Outpatients Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic with a DSM-IV diagnosis of dementia participated in this cross-sectional measurement study, in which information from several aggression scales was combined into one aggression score. Data from seven aggression scales were used to indicate the latent aggression variable. Results provide evidence that a multidimensional latent variable model of aggression adequately represents the data. Reliability of the latent variable was estimated at 0.9, whereas reliability of the separate scales estimated with the sample were less than 0.54. The findings suggest that combining multiple scales into one aggression score using latent variable modelling results in comprehensive and reliable aggression scores that offer researchers several advantages over current methods for measuring aggression.
