Annotation | Although it has no clear definition, the term "dignity" is increasingly being used in discussions on health care. This review touches on the little literature that there is on how human dignity can be promoted or maintained in health and social care. The authors conclude that care that is targeted on the "how many" rather than the "how well" is neither in the best interests of the patient nor the provider. Not only do the best principles of health care (such as caring) need to be reinstated, but so too does the contemporary research into those factors that might act as barriers to or facilitators of dignity in health care.
