Annotation | The major objectives of the study were to map the old age home scenario throughout India, but especially the districts of Kerala, and to assess the profile of residents in such homes. There are 134 homes in Kerala, one fifth of India's total. Currently, at least 5 new residential homes appear each year in India. The number of residents reported in this survey total 5076, of which 60% are females. Surprisingly, 48% of older residents have one living son, and those with one living daughter total 41%. The results clearly indicate that even those who have children are left to fend for themselves, which often results in a move into a residential home in Kerala. These results relate to a survey conducted in 1999. (KJ/RH). |
