AnnotationServices for people with dementia are suffering as homes close and recruitment problems mount against the background of an ageing population. There are more than 700,000 people with dementia in the UK. Under the Care Standards Act 2000, general nursing homes categorised as just "OP" or old people, cannot be registered as being able to care for people with dementia. However, many of their residents may already have Alzheimer's disease (AD) or some other form of dementia. The criteria for free nursing care are narrowly defined: whilst someone with terminal cancer needing 24 hour nursing care will receive it free, those with dementia are charged for "personal care". The main problem is that care of older people is underfunded, and that dementia services need more resources to deliver quality care, including staff who are well-trained. (RH).
