Annotation | The income gap between the top and bottom of the pensioner population has grown significantly during the last 20 years. That gap is likely to get even wider, since there will be fewer people of working age paying taxes, national insurance and pensions contributions in relation to the numbers they will have to support. The prospects for the lowest paid and the unemployed are particularly bleak. The government and the pensions industry are encouraging us to rethink our approach to retirement, perhaps as a right rather than a privilege. (RH). |
