AnnotationThe Human Tissue Act 1961 is acknowledged to be ambiguous and inadequate for covering a range of circumstances. Although the scandal at Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool involved the removal and retention of organs and tissues of children who had died, older people are likely to be more affected than most by uncertainties in the Department of Health's (DH) statement "Interim statement on the use of organs and tissues: draft for consultation". This article introduces and produces the statement in full, which can also be found on the DH website at www.doh.gov.uk/tissue/. (RH).
