AnnotationThere is increasing evidence that the issue of supporting working carers of older adults is becoming significant for employers, as demographic change leads to a growing need to recruit and retain employees. This report presents the findings of a study that investigated how working carers and managers perceived and experienced existing workplace policies and practices designed to help them manage work-life roles. The study was carried out between February 2000 and February 2002 in two public sector organisations: a social services department (SSD) of a shire county in the West Midlands, and a National Health Service (NHS) Trust in a large West Midlands conurbation. The report covers: the context of work and family life; family-friendly policies and practices used by the SSD and NHS Trust; and what helps working carers with the juggling act, and what hindrances do they face? Case studies illustrate the perspectives of six carers. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) supported this project as part of its programme of research and innovative development projects. (RH).
