Annotation | Persistent pain can be defined as a painful experience that continues for a prolonged period of time that may not be associated with a recognizable disease process. The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) published the predecessor of this clinical practice guideline, "The management of chronic pain in older persons" in 1998. Since then, there have been advances in pharmacology and the availability of new drugs and strategies for the management of pain in older people. The present recommendations are in four sections: assessment of persistent pain; pharmacological treatment; neuropharmacological strategies; and recommendations for health systems that care for older people.
